    Shownotes for Hak5 Episode 404!

    http://photosynth.net/default.aspx

Photosynth is a potent mixture of two independent breakthroughs: the ability to reconstruct the scene or object from a bunch of flat photographs, and the technology to bring that experience to virtually anyone over the Internet.

Using techniques from the field of computer vision, Photosynth examines images for similarities to each other and uses that information to estimate the shape of the subject and the vantage point each photo was taken from. With this information, we recreate the space and use it as a canvas to display and navigate through the photos. Photosynth was inspired by the breakthrough research on Photo Tourism from the University of Washington and Microsoft Research. This work pioneered the use of photogrammetry to power a cinematic and immersive experience

Providing that experience requires viewing a LOT of data though—much more than you generally get at any one time by surfing someone’s photo album on the web. That’s where our Seadragon™ technology comes in: delivering just the pixels you need, exactly when you need them. It allows you to browse through dozens of 5, 10, or 100(!) megapixel photos effortlessly, without fiddling with a bunch of thumbnails and waiting around for everything to load.

    Check it!

Simply download Photosynth, take some pictures on your camera, and upload them to the program. You can delete photos, add however many you want, give your Photosynth a title, etc.

    Best of all- it’s free!

    A Few Notes

On the past three episodes of Hak5, I’ve gotten the chance to talk about some nifty stuff that I’ll touch up on here!

    Audiosurf:

    http://www.audio-surf.com/

The Wikipedia entry for Audiosurf is incredibly good, with lots of information about it:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audiosurf

    OpenDNS

    http://www.opendns.com/

Your computer reads DNS as an IP address while you read DNS as www.something.com.  Using OpenDNS (which is completely free) lets you block anything from your kids or co-workers, protects you from phishing, customize the logo’s that appear, create shortcuts so you don’t have to type www.gmail.com and instead can type mail, and tons more.  It’s a great free tool for anyone who needs a cheap way to get around normal DNS protocol, and customize something of your very own.

    Hak5 BBS

Hak5 has a bulliten board system via telnet.  To get to this in Windows (In Vista make sure to enable the command prompt), go to the Start menu.  Go to Run… and type in cmd.  This takes you to the command prompt window.  Type in telnet bbs.hak5.org (TELNET (spacebar) bbs.hak5.org) and press enter.

This will pull up some nifty Hak5 ascii art and ask you to create a Username and Password.  From there, once you log in, you can read messages, join a chat room, and best of all - play Legend Of the Red Dragon (LORD).  To get to LORD, skip reading your messages, and once you get to the big list of options (usually colored in blue font) choose X for external programs.  Then choose 2 for games, and 6 for LORD.
